Why you might need a neuropsychological assessment
A neuropsychological assessment is recommended when there are concerns about cognition, behaviour, or emotional functioning that may be impacting daily life, education, or work. Individuals may seek an assessment if they, or those around them, have noticed difficulties such as problems with attention, learning, reasoning, language, or social interaction.
These assessments are valuable for clarifying whether such cognitive or behavioural difficulties are linked to an underlying neurological condition or diagnosis.
Typical reasons for referral include:
- Struggling with concentration or memory that affects performance at school, university, or work
- Following a head injury, stroke, or neurological illness and wanting to understand the impact on thinking skills
- Concerns about developmental differences in adults and children, such as differences in learning, speech, or social interaction
- Clarification of new or longstanding learning difficulties
- Monitoring disease progression or response to treatment in conditions like dementia or multiple sclerosis
An assessment can provide the ‘why’ and identity cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

How a Neuropsychologist can assist
A Clinical Neuropsychologist specialises in understanding how the brain’s structure and function affect thinking, behaviour, and emotions. They are interested in helping people who may be experiencing challenges with memory, learning, attention, problem-solving, or other cognitive abilities, which can arise from injury, illness, or developmental differences. In Australia, Clinical Neuropsychologists complete post-graduate training and supervised clinical practice, and are highly training in assessment and diagnosis of neurological and developmental conditions.

These assessments are intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of cognitive functioning, guiding any diagnoses and recommendations to support everyday life.
Fee Schedule
For all neuropsychological assessment, an initial consultation is conducted to understand presenting issues, expectations, goals, and to ensure a full neuropsychological assessment is warranted. The fee will be determined following the initial assessment and will depend on the complexity of the assessment. If an additional report is required for purposes such as NDIS, an additional report fee is applicable.
